Top 10 Ways to Increase Tranquility in Your Home

by | 1 comment

Does your home invoke warm inviting emotions?  Does it give you a sense of serenity at the end of the day?  Finding inner peace and harmony in your home is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.  It can be achieved through a HOME REFRESH, and here are the top 10 areas that have the greatest impact.

Paint and Wallpaper

The easiest way to change the look of a room is with paint or wallpaper, or both!  Yes, wallpaper is making a huge comeback. Try an accent wall with color.  Get a few samples from a paint store and move them around the room, seeing how the light changes it during the day and evening.  Different shades in a similar color palette will give your home a cohesive look and feel.  Sherwin Williams is my paint store of choice.  For something extraordinary, this custom mural wallpaper can be found on MadFly Essentials

Nothing changes the mood of a room more than lighting, and the possibilities are endless.  From tall standing lamps, to table lamps, floor lighting, and accent lighting with candles and fairy lights, rethink how you are illuminating your home!  Smart lighting and dimmers can all add drama and interest to your home.  Check out what smart lighting can do for your home at Philips Hue.

Art speaks differently to everyone and is the most personal of all decisions in your home.  From conversation pieces to abstract art that simply enhances the overall mood, find what moves you.  Bigger is better when it comes to art.  Art isn’t limited to paintings or photographs either, so think outside the box.  It doesn’t have to always hang on a wall.  Hang a shelf and layer 3-5 pieces on it with some complimentary decor.  Uttermost has incredible pieces to suit all tastes.  Nordic Wall Decor has put together this beautifully coordinated wall gallery.

Rugs are another way to add impact to a home, and can also be seen as another piece of art and a conversation starter.  It adds a sense of softness to a room, and anchors the furniture.  Just be sure it is the right size.  Too small and it gets lost and has no purpose.  Too large and it throws the balance of the room off base.  Well Woven is a great place for unique designs.

By far, furniture is the biggest decision in any home.  Some pieces demand more of an investment than others, such as a sofa.  Solid color furnishings lend themselves to a longer life cycle because the look can be changed up drastically with textiles and decor as your tastes change.  Measure and measure again, and use painters tape or string to tape off the new pieces you are considering to be sure they will fit the space.  West Elm is one of my favorites.

Pillows and Throws

Personally, I love pillows and throws and honestly can’t have enough of them.  This is where you can add color and texture in a big way in your home.  Use them to change up your look with different seasons, or just when you want a new twist to an existing space.  One of my favorite sites for pillows is Society 6, it’s like artwork on pillows, and very affordable.

We all have pieces in our home that we sometimes just don’t even see anymore because they have been on that shelf or in that room for so long.  Take inventory of your decor and try moving it to another place in the room, or in a different room.  If you don’t love it, donate it or find another home for it.  Don’t forget that books can be used as decor as well.  Z Gallerie is one of my favorites.

Window treatments soften your home and todays’ styles are trending toward simple and sheer to let the light in!  Hanging your curtain rod closer to the ceiling lifts the eye and makes the room appear larger.  Just be sure they are long enough to just touch the floor.  Plantation shutters, sheer curtains, roman shades, and cornice boards are just a few options worth exploring.  Williams Window Treatments is my go-to for in-home consultation and exceptional service here in Tampa.  These beautiful roman shades can be found on Etsy.

Another means to relax and put your spirits in the right place is with scent.  Whether it’s through candles, aromatherapy, or even an HVAC scent system, making your home smell inviting is a huge mood booster.  An HVAC scent system evenly scents your entire home with essential oils and Aroma 360 has a luxury hotel line that is absolutely heavenly.  Shop Spa Room for this room atomizer.

It’s a fact that clutter and lack of organization increases our stress, making it harder to see the forest for the trees.  Look around your home and ask yourself, “Does this (fill in the blank) enhance my life?  Is it necessary?  Could it be placed elsewhere so that I know where it is but it’s not an eyesore?  Getting organized is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.   Spend some time at the Container Store for great ideas.

Countless articles have been written on the psychological impact of home decor, from emotions related to color choices, to fabrics that invoke cozy vs. productivity, and the emotional effect of lighting in our environment.  Even ceiling height can affect our sense of calm and safety.  Are you ready for a new look and feel in your home?  Attention to any or all of these can have a dramatic impact on your home, your mood, and even your productivity!  Stay tuned for future blog posts that dive deeper into each of these areas!
